Glossary

The words up4 uses, each in one line. Names in the app are the ones you see on screen.

Accounts and access

Company
The top-level account. It owns the monitors, members, billing and credit; everything else sits inside one Company.
Team
A group of members inside a Company. A Team decides who can see and change what.
Client
A customer of an agency. Clients keep monitors, scheduled jobs, status pages and reports apart. They exist once agency mode is switched on.

Checking

Monitor
One target that up4 checks on an interval: a website, a port, a DNS record or a ping.
Check
One run of a monitor from one region. It ends as up or down and records how long the answer took.
Region
A place checks run from: Europe, North America, Asia or Australia. See checks and regions.
Interval
The time between two checks of a monitor.
Keyword check
A website check that also reads the page and looks for a word that must, or must not, appear.
Scheduled job
A task that runs on your side and reports to up4. up4 raises the alarm when the report stays away.
Check-in
The short request a scheduled job sends to its up4 address to say it ran.
Grace period
Extra time a scheduled job gets after its expected time before up4 counts the check-in as missing.

States and timing

Up and down
A monitor is up while checks succeed and down once they fail.
Degraded
degraded: the target answers, but slower than expected. up4 only warns about it when slowdown alerts are on.
Pending
pending: a monitor that has no result yet.
Paused
Checks are stopped on purpose, so a paused monitor sends no alerts.
Confirmation
up4 changes a monitor's state only after 3 matching results, so a single failed check does not alert you.
Confirmation period
Optional extra time a failure must last before it counts as an outage. It applies on the way down only.
Recovery period
How long a monitor must stay healthy before the outage counts as over.
Availability
The share of checks that succeeded in a period, also called uptime.
Response time
How long a check waited for the answer.

Alerting

Alert channel
A way up4 reaches you, such as email, SMS, a call, a chat app or a webhook.
Alert plan
Steps with wait times and repeats that bring in people one after another until someone acknowledges.
Alert mode
Per monitor: Right away alerts once an outage is confirmed; Skip short blips waits for a longer outage in total.
On-call rotation
A schedule that says who is on call when. An alert plan can page whoever is on call.
Acknowledge
Acknowledge: tell up4 you have seen an incident. It promises neither a takeover nor a fix.

Incidents and status pages

Incident
The recorded outage, from the first confirmed failure to the recovery, with its timeline.
Resolve
Resolve: close an incident once the cause is fixed.
Playbook
Reusable steps for fixing a known problem, shown on the incident.
Maintenance window
A planned period in which up4 skips checks for a monitor, so planned work does not alert you.
Status page
A public page that shows the state of the monitors you choose, plus your status reports.
Status report
A message you post on a status page during an incident or maintenance.

Credit and plans

Starting credit
The credit a new Company starts with, €9. Checks use it up. When it is gone, monitoring pauses until you add credit or choose a plan.
Wallet
Your prepaid balance. You top it up, and checks draw from it.
Grace mode
After a first payment, an empty balance does not stop monitoring at once: for 7 up4 checks every 5 minutes at no charge, then pauses.
Allowance
The usage a Team or Agency plan includes each month.
Add-on
Extra capacity you can add to a plan. See add-ons.
